A Birthday with Wild Dolphins

I am a Cancer. It’s my zodiac sign, and one of the four astrological signs governed by the planetary element of water. And for this water baby, water is my home away from home!

I have loved water sports as long as I can remember, starting with swimming lessons at age five at Idlewild Lake, a Black resort in northern Michigan, where my family spent the better part of every summer. There I learned not only to swim, but also to fish, motorboat, and water ski. After graduating from college, I moved to California, where my water adventures expanded to include sailing, surfing, whitewater rafting, houseboating, and becoming a long-distance fitness swimmer.

The one water adventure I longed for, but had never experienced, was to swim with wild dolphins. A “dolphin quest” adventure seemed like it would be a wonderful birthday present to give to myself, as well as a perfect hiatus from the rigors of work, family dramas, and my ever-elusive love life.

To put the wheels in motion I called my friend Paul, who had a beach house on the Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, and asked him if I could visit for a week or so. He enthusiastically welcomed me. The trip was on!
